Game-improvement advances aren’t just in drivers, irons or balls. They’re in shoes, too. Padraig Harrington says the sole technology on his Hi-Tec CDT shoes has helped him increase his ball speed. Etonic’s G>SOK has a cleatless sole designed to improve traction and decrease weight. An important element in soles is thermoplastic urethane (TPU), a malleable polymer used to provide cushioning and structural support. The good news is the new soles aren’t hard on greens. Here are four for spring:
1. FOOTJOY Classics Tour. The calfskin standard gets a techy, lightweight TPU sole ($249.99 price).
2. ADIDAS a3. The TPU sole plate is designed to provide stability; it has a polyurethane-based heel cushion ($109.99).
3. ETONIC G>SOK. Cleatless sole features three kinds of pyramid-shape turf grips and bars, a TPU shank for steadiness and Goodyear rubber for durability ($84.99).
4. NIKE SP-7 TW Tour. The TPU outsole has a lightweight, thin steel shank, contrasting traction elements on left and right shoes and 130 contact points ($139.99).
